23 August 2026
Local employees have until 31 August 2026 to decide whether to remain in Skim LINDUNG 24 Jam or opt out. This is a personal decision, and the facts below are laid out to help employees weigh it based on what the scheme actually provides and what it actually costs, without any recommendation either way.
On cost, the contribution is fully paid by the employee, not the employer. It starts at 0.75 percent of monthly wages, calculated on a salary capped at RM6,000, meaning the maximum monthly deduction at this rate is RM45. This rate is fixed for the first phase, running until 31 May 2028, before increasing in later phases.
On what is covered, the scheme pays out for accidents that happen outside working hours and are unrelated to work, provided they occur within Malaysia. This includes accidents at home, during personal activities, or while travelling for non-work reasons. It does not cover accidents that happen during work, since those are already covered separately under Skim Bencana Pekerjaan at no cost to the employee. It also does not cover accidents outside Malaysia, accidents involving fraud or criminal acts, self inflicted injury, or accidents that occur before an employee's coverage under the scheme actually begins.
On what is paid out if a covered accident occurs, benefits include free medical treatment at PERKESO panel clinics or government hospitals, reimbursement for private treatment at government set rates, and payment during certified sick leave of at least four days. For more serious cases, permanent disablement benefit is assessed by a Medical Board based on wage and age, with an additional RM500 monthly allowance for those who become totally and permanently disabled and require full time care. Rehabilitation support, including physiotherapy and vocational training, is also funded by PERKESO. In the event of death, dependants receive ongoing financial support, a RM3,000 funeral payment, and an education loan facility for dependent children.
On the decision itself, there is one point that every employee should take note of. Once enrolled, whether by choosing to join or by taking no action before 31 August 2026, participation becomes permanent, and there is no opting out afterward. Employees who wish to opt out must do so within the window from 13 July to 31 August 2026. No action within that window results in automatic and permanent enrolment.
This is intended as a summary of the facts as stated in PERKESO's official FAQ, not as advice on what any individual employee should choose. Employees who want to think this through further, or who have questions specific to their situation, can refer to PERKESO's call centre at 1300-22-8000 or a nearby PERKESO office.
